It is difficult to describe quite how extraordinary a Ciel Chapman dress is when worn. It fits the body like a glove and accentuates every curve of a woman's silhouette. This dress is exactly like that, as shown in the attached video of it being worn by Francesca Cumani at Ascot 2025. This dress is very simple with a cowl neck from shoulder to shoulder. The bodice is corseted and the skirt hangs straight down to mid and has a neat little gathering on one side. The dress has a zip on one side to help get into it.
Ceil Chapman was reportedly Marilyn Monroe’s favorite fashion designer and is known to have designed many of her most iconic dresses. She provided the trousseau for Elizabeth Taylor’s 1950 wedding to Conrad “Nicky” Hilton. Other celebrity clients included Deborah Kerr, Greer Garson, Grace Kelly and Aretha Franklin.
Ceil Chapman's designs have been compared with those of Anne Fogarty, Nettie Rosenstein, and Norman Norell. Chapman was among those who succeeded in adapting Christian Dior's "New Look" for relatively affordable cocktail wear targeted toward the American ready-to-wear market.
